Sunset over the mountains on the Alaska Coast

Programs

Our Kenai Peninsula Chapter is focused on plastic pollution - removing it from our beaches and preventing it from getting into the water in the first place through efforts like our Ocean Friendly Restaurant Program.

Beach Cleanups

While cleanups are not a solution to the plastic pollution crisis, they are an important piece of the puzzle. Not only do they remove harmful trash from our coasts, which benefits wildlife, water quality, and local economies through enhanced recreation and tourism, but they are an easy way to get engaged and connect with other stewardship-minded people. When possible, we collect data which we then use to push for source reduction policies. You can explore these data by clicking the Learn More button!

Rise Above Plastics

Rise Above Plastics is designed to eliminate the impacts of plastics in the marine environment by raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and by advocating for a reduction of single-use plastics and the recycling of all plastics.

Ocean Friendly Hotels

We are excited to announce our first-ever Ocean Friendly Hotel, Alaskan Troutfitters! Our OFH Program officially launched in September 2024, and we're stoked to see Troutfitters lead the way in sustainable hospitality on the Kenai Peninsula.

Ocean Friendly Restaurants

The Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Restaurants program tackles plastic pollution at its source. One restaurant, one customer at a time, it increases awareness, drives behavior change, and ultimately creates scalable impact to reduce our plastic footprint.

Ocean Friendly Gardens

The Ocean Friendly Gardens program sees landscapes and streets as solutions to water pollution and more. While the KPC doesn't currently have an active OFG Program, if you're interested in the power of rain gardens to improve our waterways and communities, email us at  chair@kenaipeninsula.surfrider.org.

Blue Water Task Force

Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) is the Surfrider's national volunteer-run water quality monitoring program program. We collect and test water samples for harmful pathogens. Our goal is to ensure the public is informed about whether or not it's safe to swim. While the KPC doesn't currently have an active BWTF Program, if you're interested in monitoring your local beach's water quality, email us at chair@kenaipeninsula.surfrider.org.
