Frozen Coast Film Festival and Photo Contest: A Big Success!

The first-ever Frozen Coast Film Festival and Photo Contest was an unforgettable evening, filled with incredible stories, breathtaking visuals, and a true sense of community. We’re thrilled to share that 90 people joined us at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center, exceeding all our expectations. It was wonderful to see so many faces, all gathered to celebrate our shared love for Alaska’s coast.

One of the highlights of the night was announcing the winner of the Frozen Coast Photo Contest. Matt Lowber took home the top prize—a surfboard! Matt was overjoyed, especially since he’s never surfed before but is excited to dive into the sport. Seeing his enthusiasm was a perfect reminder of why we do this: to inspire connection and excitement about Alaska’s coastlines.

We were also so grateful to have Heather White from the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies (CACS) join us for the evening. Heather introduced the film "Keepers of the North," which highlights innovative approaches to tackling plastic waste in Alaska. CACS has been an incredible partner to Surfrider, and we are so thankful for the work they do to protect and care for our coastal ecosystems. Their passion and dedication are truly inspiring.

The films were another big hit. "Footprints on Katmai" left many of us in awe as it followed artist and filmmaker Max Romey retracing his late grandmother’s steps along the remote beaches of Katmai. The film’s blend of family history, stunning scenery, and a powerful message about marine debris struck a deep chord.

"With the Tide" was equally moving, sharing the story of the Yakutat Surf Club and how surfing is building community in Alaska’s remote coastal areas. The film reminded us that the ocean can be a source of joy, connection, and hope, even in the farthest corners of the state.

We want to thank everyone who attended, submitted photos, or helped make this event possible. Your support and enthusiasm made the night a true celebration of Alaska’s unique coastal beauty and the stories that bring us closer to it.

Here’s to more events like this one, where we can come together to honor the coast and the people who love it. We can’t wait to see what’s next for our community!
